Freezing Friday

I have returned (to the blog). I've neglected it for a long time. Sorry. I've done a crappy job of everything, including my Friday action this year. I've been out every Friday, but I feel like I'm just missing something. I don't know. Mabye because I'm so busy this year, my heart isn't in it as much? I don't think that's true. I still love it, and look forward to it every week, but maybe its just harder to fit it all in.

I've had a bunch more people pursuing videos, and photo stuff, and things that just take time. I like being able to help, but it does strain things sometimes.

I'm excited about Thanksgiving.

I'm thankful for:
Family
Friends
Seasons (even if it makes my "job" harder)
Candy
The end of the semester
Freedom (and generally the country I live in)
Holidays
Pets

That's what I did today. (This one's going to be brief. I have less free time on Friday afternoons than I did last year.)

I made a few extra stops around campus, and saw some faces I had never seen, and they likewise. I had one guy offer me a McDonald's fry in exchange for some candy, and I gladly made the trade. Normally I just give it away. Then later, I was offered another fry, but it was the waffle variety from Chik-fil-A. I guess all that to say that I slowed down for more than 3 seconds for a few people today.

I think my favorite was getting to play Hacky-Sack w/ some regulars outside of AJ. Today I almost pulled off a stall on my Candy (Tool) Belt. Maybe next time.

Oh, and there was a nice gal following me for a little bit taking pictures. Hopefully she'll send me copies, and I'll post them up here.

Over the summer I managed to forget how much I love doing this... its all coming back though. :) I ran out of all my candy today. Bummer. I'm going to have to buy some more. Good thing Halloween is just around the corner, and I can LOAD UP on all the goodies.

I'm not in a very big "writer" type of mood so you aren't going to get much out of me this week. I will say though that I met one guy today who was excited that it was Friday. He really could yell. That made me happy.

Oh... I forget to also say thanks Patrick Hogan for the great drawing. Don't you think Pat did a great job? ;)

Its getting chillier out... time to start thinking about long sleeves folks. I saw one too many people gripping their exposed arms like it was winter.... its only going to get worse.

Hey, maybe to keep warm you could order a sweatshirt instead.

To my faithful friends and recipients of my joy:

I have let you down today, and I hope that it won't happen again anytime in the near future. I should have warned you all this was going to happen. I hope you can forgive me. I had to make a decision for myself today though. Wednesday I began a long journey South, and by last night around Midnight, I was happy about the decision that I had made: I went to see the opening night of Foo Fighters and Weezer in Atlanta, Georgia. Let me just tell you that it was the most awesome concert I have ever went to. Today however, I am feeling bad that, as I type this from a terminal at the Library on UGA's campus, that people are probably wondering where I am today.

Rest assured, I will be back again next week, and maybe I will try to find a way to make it up to you. Maybe I'll give away some free T-shirt or something? I don't know. Thank you for understanding, and I'll be back in full effect next Friday.

If its any consolation, I have been sick all week, and I might not have been able to yell today anyway, but at least I could have helped foster some smiles. I guess it doesn't matter now.

Well, its been far too long. The summer was boring without my weekly duties, and its nice to see the school did something with all that money we give them. The McKinley facelift looks great. I'm so sorry. Its been so long. I'm sure you all understand. Its that time of year where it gets hard to do anything but somehow you manage to spend as much time as possible doing something out in the beautiful weather.

Only 3 more weeks left. Its been a whole year. I've had such a good year. I can't imagine what life without "Happy Friday"s would have been like. It doesn't seem like very much fun.

For all of you that are worried about what is going to happen next year... I guess we'll have to see what happens. I am probably going to take a hiatus over the summer and regroup for the fall. Maybe I'll get a new scooter that won't break so much. Maybe I'll get a different outfit. Like I said, we'll see what the future holds.

I hope that you all understand what is about to follow then. This whole Friday gig isn't too expensive, but it all adds up. Week after week the dollars slip away to buy new candy, and fix the Blue Streak. So here is what I'm going to do. After many suggestions, I am going to make some T-Shirts. I have 3 designs that I've made so far that are pretty simple, but I think will be fun to wear around campus, or on "casual Friday" whereever you end up working after graduating. Don't ever forget to keep your Friday's happy. :)

Oh wow! It looks like I'm in the paper today! That's great. Don't worry, all this attention won't go to my head.

It was another trouble-ridden day (no pun intended). I was able to get the scooter to propel me to campus, but by about the time I got to Scramble Light, I had blown my fuse. I did some repairs on the scooter last night, and they worked wonders on my speed on my way to campus. Apparently I was runnin on only half of my batteries power. I did some soldering and made some fresh connections, and we were back in business. Enough of that stuff.

I long for the days of spring again.

So I pushed myself to the TComm building again today, and did some repairs. The guys were almost floored.... they equated it to seeing Batman expose the tender guts of the Batmobile.... a sign of weakness. I assured them that it was a simple change of a fuse, and I was off, spreading joy again to the rest of the folks.

As I continued I blew the fuse again! WHAT IS WRONG?!?!?! I don't know, but I'm going to have to tear her apart again. Poor scooter. I had a whole pack of fuses with me, but the fell out of my belt. Speaking of my belt, its empty again. There aren't any good holidays around for cheap candy right now. Shoot!

I made a special visit today. After the regular rounds, I entered the CAP building. I think that building alone house more people that haven't seen me than any other building on campus. The special visit was a result of an interview I was to have with Laura. This was quite an adventure. I was immediately greeted by the cheery recluses. They certainly don't get out enough. :) Well I came to them this week. I couldn't chat too long though, I was on a mission to find Laura. I pushed my scooter down to the main atrium area there in the building and was sorry to find myself in the midst of a whole gaggle of finely dressed folks. Fortunately they were allowed to bring smiles to the occasion, and I felt quite productive there as well. I met Malcolm, apparently a highly respected member of the faculty there. He spoke highly of me, and encouraged me to show these folks, who knew nothing of my labors, a little of what I do every week. At first I mumbled in a sort of whispered voice "happy friday." He said that was not a true representation, and told me to do it for real. I said okay, shortly followed by a hearty, window rattling HAPPY FRIDAY (with the nearly mandatory "whoo" at the end) . He was satisfied and requested an encore performance any time. That probably won't happen, but we'll see. Maybe some day I will feel spunky and do it again.

I asked if he knew of Laura. I really wish I would have remember her last name. "I think it starts with a 'K'." That didn't help anyone. Noone knew of this Laura K. the member of Glue that was trying to interview me. Eventually after riding the S...L...O...W... elevator up and down twice, I gave up toting the scooter with me and ditched it in the lobby there. I finally met some helpful guys who had her cell phone number. Thank God. I was starting to run out of time. We had our little interview, and we got our picture taken together. I'm still working on being photogenic. She was a natural.

Another bonus of today was that by the time I was pushing myself back to the lair, it was nearly 1 o'clock. I think some new faces saw me, and were genuinely brightened. I like that. Keep on smiling!

So today was nearly a disaster. I went to change in the "Scooter Lair" and the scooter decided today was not a day to scoot.... at least not under its own power. I really wish I would have eaten my Wheaties this morning. In fact I wish I would have eaten anything. By the time I was passing by the Student Center I was already exhausted. I never realized how much of an incline there was on all the roads around campus. Its uphill both ways. ;)

I normally look forward to the first big "HAPPY FRIDAY" that I belt out around the Whitinger Building, but today I was sucking wind by then, and yelled, but it definitely didn't have the some shocking volume that is normally there. Oh well, the effect is the same, its just not as far-reaching.

By the time I made it to the Scramble Light it was already noon, meaning I had missed most of the crowd. Drats! That also mean the TComm guys would be gone already, and that's a bummer too. I look forward to them every week.

Well, my efforts didn't go unrewarded. I got to take a bunch of pictures with folks, and decided that walking beside my scooter wasn't a half bad idea. Especially after a guy in from of TC gave me an untouched ( I think ... it was rather full) Hot Chocolate. I wonder if he bought it in anticipation of my arrival. How sweet, and how sweet it was... and hot too! That was nice. As I slowly moved through campus, there was a much more personal feel to the rounds. I got to cruise along at the same pace as the rest of the folks. I think it was nice for all parties involved.

It was a pretty standard day full of honks, yells, and fists pumping all accompanied by ear-to-ear smiles.

So I got to Lafollette. 10 minutes later, and some old friends came running out to greet me! I remember them. They gave me the sign way back in October I think? Well, your pictures are up now! Oh... and they gave me some of those valentine cake thingies. The same Little Debbie treats that come in the Christmas tree shape, but these were in the shape of hearts. Then one asked me to be her valentine. *blush* Sure. I guess I didn't really blush, but I should have.

I took my time home, and was trying to get a ride. I kept looking for some nice person driving a truck to haul me and my stubborn scooter back towards, but not to, the lair (we wouldn't want anyone to find out my true identity).

All along the way I chatted with the people and took advantage of the slow speed of the day by taking more pictures. It was nice seeing you all.

I hope you all have a good week and a Happy Friday. I gotta get busy on getting that dumb scooter fixed.... if I don't, I'm going to have another Friday next week where my legs are jello from all that pushing.

Today was another beautiful day, and this time I mean it.

Before I touch on today though, I want to talk about last night. I had an interview w/ a nice lady from the Star Press. I think she was suprised to find that people really do look forward to my arrival on Friday at noon. Anyway, hopefully something will show up in the paper, and people will be inspired by me somehow... Inspired to do what? I'm not sure. I think she will be wandering around a couple Fridays collecting opinions and what not, so tell her the truth, whatever that is. :)

Speaking of being inspired, a guy came up to me, shook my hand, and said in paraphrased form that he's glad that I do what I do, and that it makes a difference to folks. I should have given him a sucker.... not because he is one though. ;)

I'm really going to have to do something about the scooter. Last week, it was stuck "on" the whole time and my battery drained really quickly. Same thing happened again. I'm going to really have to clean the thing too. Its uber-dirty from all the slush and stuff and I wonder if the salty-slush water didn't get in some of the inner workings and cause some "short"ing that results in me going full throttle around campus.

Highlight of the day:
As I was scooting past RB, I heard a ruckus going on behind me. Behold there are 3 people in ski masks (I believe they were all ladies) shouting undiscernable things, but I could tell they weren't mad at me. Indeed they were celebrating with me. I gave each of them a sucker and wished them a Happy Friday.

My usual stop over by the sunken entrance to the AJ building (or whatever you would call that thing) had a few more folks waiting there. My "Big Man" was there, and asked me whether there was ever going to be some T-shirts made or something. I think that sounds like fun. If you think you would get one let me know via email. Maybe I'll get a whole bunch made, and that way we all have the same ones! Let me know what you think!

Well it was truly the shortest run I've ever done today. I was out about 10 minutes again. I just couldn't do it any longer. Again my fingers were frozen, but that doesn't matter... right?! Well, there aren't many notable things to mention, but here's what I got.

The sidewalks were treacherous. They didn't do a very good job of getting all the snow off. I found myself sledding more than scooting. Thankfully I never fell, but I did come close once. I also got covered in slush. The scooter performed much better than I expected it to.

I again didn't have any good candy this morning, so I decided I would bring my camera and take pictures with some folks. I didn't do it long, so maybe I will do it more in the future if anyone wants to. I will post them in a bit.

I have no idea yet how this is going to work. I think it will be a short set of rounds today. Between the cold and the snow, my scooter is going to want to work for about 10 minutes. Maybe I should try and find someone with a snowmobile. That would be awesome! Maybe I'll just end up walking. I don't really know yet.

Hopefully all those fantastic grounds crew folk will have cleaned off the sidewalks sufficiently. In reality they probably are just polishing them nice and slick as usual. I guess we'll see.

It actually hurts to type right now. I wanted to make sure that I hurried back to my computer so I could say that honestly. I believe that my fingers experienced mild frostbite.

When I started out today, the temperature was somewhere around the 20 degree mark. It says that it feels like 11 though. Now add on top of that the speed of my scooter, and I am easily into the single digits. Point is that I was freeeeeeezing. My poor little scooter was tired of it too. Physics was working against me again, and the scooter's battery decided that it would stop working in half the time. Thankfully all the extra "leg-work" kept me a little warmer, but it also cut my adventures short.

I apologize for the crappy candy. All I had was generico bubble gum that is hard to chew on a warm day, let alone one like this.

Its good to be back, and its good to be able to see all your smiling faces again. Until next week....

Its been a while since I've written anything and I'm sorry, but its also been a while since I've truly had a "HAPPY FRIDAY!"

3) It's freakin' COLD out today. I'm not looking forward to that aspect of my voyage today, but I am totally excited about resuming my duties. Duty has such a negative connotation with it some time, so maybe I should find a better word for what I do, but whatever that word is, I am excited about welcoming you and me both back to a new semester.

I can't wait to get out there and freeze my butt off. Dress in layers... you know I will be. Smile, and get ready for another 5 months of fun!!! If there is anyone out there that still is aching to be 'moved' by the Happy Friday Guy, send me an email, and I can arrange something. I don't want anyone to go without.

Boldy Go Where I Haven't Gone Before...

I did go a few ways that I haven't gone before, but I forgot to go on the North side of Lafollette. I don't normally see many folks over there anyway. Oh well.

It was rainy today so I got pretty wet, but that can't stop me. In fact it made stopping sorta fun because I could skid, and slide on one foot to stop. I still have some leftover Halloween candy, so still getting chocolate and the like... I'm just about out of that though.

I didn't post from last week, so here's the shortened version of that. It was dreadfully cold. My fingers froze. I did the same old stuff. I ran into the same ground's crew guy, and he took his picture with me. He gave me his gloves. That's it for highlights that I can think of.

Back to this week.

I found thefacebook this week and saw that someone made a group in honor of me. Thanks folks! At this point there are 699 people in this "fan club" of sorts. Anyway, I heard it through the grapevine, or through the message board, whatever, that there were folks out there that had never gotten their spirits uplifted by the ol' "Happy Friday Guy." Well let me know where you're at around Noon on Fridays and I will try to make a special appearance for you. Sen me an email. Everyone deserves a Happy Friday! This week I tried to find Jill Gerber... I hope that I found you... I think I did.

I accidentally chucked(threw) a chocolate bar into the side of a car, instead of through the window... sorry gold car ( I can't remember what it was). At that same intersection I heard someone shouting something, and they had a SpongeBob head thingy they were holding or something... I'm not sure what was going on.

Well that's not it. The SpongeBob car returns and I wish them a Happy Friday again. The SpongeBob holder (obviously not the driver) asks me if I will go on a date with the driver. I stammered, because I still haven't figured out a response to these questions, and said something like "I don't think so" but then I felt bad about that, so I explained that I don't really date. I guess I could, but that would be weird. Would we hop on my scooter and cruise down to Subway? She would have to be small. My scooter says it can only hold 250 pounds, and I've got %60 of that already spoken for. I wouldn't be afraid to go over that a little, but if you start pushing 120 pounds, we might have to walk. She was a small girl though... hmmm. I think it would somehow tarnish my image... its not like I'm doing this to pick up chicks, however it seems to be working. ;)

Still not the end of her story.... So I though that interaction was over, I start to go back to the "Scooter Cave". The story continues as she proceeds to follow me!!! Oh boy... I'm being followed. At first she was driving real slow sorta beside me, but she ended up speeding up because there were cars behind her, and my poor scooter was running out of e-juice so he was going slow. Well, she got stopped at a stop light where she was turning right. I could tell right there though, that if I drove by she was going to go whichever direction I was! Yep! Sure enough she did. What is the next thing you do when trying to protect your identity, you start ducking into alleys and acting funny, and that's what I did. In the process another car started acting fishy, but I finally lost them both. Whew!

I made it back to my cave, and no one was there waiting for me. I think that's it for now.

Lights, Camera, Action ...... Shut up!?

Today was a fun day... I got to wear several cameras. All eyez on me! Anyway, there was a "scooter cam" that was mounted to the scooter and shot up into the air towards my face. The other camera sorta stunk because I had to wear it on this helmet, but it was fun because it was pointed at whatever I was looking at... I sure hope it turned out. I can't wait to see what this "documentary" will look like.

Extra good candy today. Its halloween weekend, and its alot easier to find the good stuff cheaper. I felt swarmed a couple of times today. Like I had money I was handing out or something. I guess in some cultures, mostly Amazonians, chocolate is probably treated like currency.

So I have never experienced anything like what I'm about to say in my short time as professional encourager/Idealistic Icon; I was told to "shut up." I figured the day would come eventually, and today was that day. Maybe he's just having a bad day, but his face looked like he had been holding it in for a while and was finally able to let it out. Well I commend him for expressing himself. I could swear as I was zooming by, someone else echoed his sentiments, but back at him. I feel vindicated. I made sure I got a good look at his face, in case I need to know it for later. He might turn into something like my archnemesis, F-You Friday Jerk, or something equally negative.

So get this... the wonders continue. As I was finishing up my run, one of the regulars came up gave me the necessary high five, and proceeded to inform me that his group (I am assuming some class project or something ) has used me as the main character in a computer game they are creating. Is that awesome or what. Yea, you're right... its Awesome.

Aside from that the same old stuff. I ran into a WHOLE bunch of campus tours today. The recruitment folks should start paying me. I think I am convincing students to attend. I guess the only way we'll find out is when the freshman start talking about it next year.

The grounds crew are becoming more and more vocal as the weeks go on. One guy has asked me on several occasions to sing the BSU fight song w/ him. I don't know it. How sad is that. Oh well. Maybe I'll learn it just for that guy. Regarding this guy though... he was driving by in his big white truck as I scooted the opposite direction. Its funny because in my mind it was all in slo-mo; He spots me as he's driving along; I point at him; and then he points back, both of us yelling happy friday at each other. It was so cinematic in my mind. He sorta had that creepy stare-into-your-soul-I'm-so-bad kind of look, but I knew he meant the best by it. :)

Bloomington Beware!

Another tidbit that I received via an outside source. The more I get these the harder they are to believe, but I must report them. Now I just sound ridiculous. Anyway here's the abbreviated scoop:

A girl from Ball State went to visit some friends in Bloomington. They went out to eat and one of the first topics of conversation was "Captain Friday." They had said they had heard of him, and wanted to know if what they had heard was real. Does "Captain Friday" really exist or is it just a silly Rumor. Its truth! I exist.

Maybe someday, I will have to take a break and cruise on down to Bloomington. Show em' a thing or two about happy Fridays.

Bed Races

Strange things happen when you put on an outfit and scream pleasant things on Fridays. For one you become a local celebrity in a little under 2 months.

In addition propositions are flitted left and right... do this fundraiser thingy, come to my [some event],sign my <fill in the blank > [sidebar]

so that's one thing I forgot to mention about earlier today. One guy was so happy that it was Friday because he just got out of History. He proceeded to ask me to put my signature on his test. Well heck yeah I will. I even decided to give him an 'A+' for his attitude. Fantastic! [end sidebar]

... back to things I'm asked to do. Well here's a new one. I just got asked to go to a really cute girl's formal. I wasn't planning on anything like this happening. When I responded with, "I don't know," she seemed put off. Sorry lady, I just don't know. She seemed happier when I gave her my email. Maybe we can make it work. Seems a little too hard, and weird.

I think I need some business cards. I would love people to start emailing me with ideas, or something.

I just got an email from a friend of a witness at the bed race. Here is what he said:

I saw the Happy Friday guy!
He first rode down the sidewalk behind the crowd and there wasn't much response. I noticed him immediately (because I knew to look for him, even though it wasn't his usual time). Well, he rode around a bit and didn't get much attention. Finally, in his gruff voice, he rode up to some of the workers and asked for Jen or Liz or whoever was in charge. The workers pointed him in the direction of the boss-lady and as he rode down the street some guy in the crowd yelled "It's Happy Friday Guy!" The crowd cheered and clapped. One of my co-workers said he thought the Happy Friday guy was getting more attention than the Bed Race. He also said he thought we needed happy Fridays.

The worker that Happy Friday guy spoke to said "I love that guy. He makes my day." I think Scooter Bob has won a couple of fans.

It goes something like this... "Happy Fri...aw shoot... day!!!" with the percussive sound "clinka chinkity chinka clank" keeping the beat in the background.

Several times the chain on my beloved scooter derailed today. I need to find a permanent solution to this problem. This has happened before. Thankfully, its not too difficult to get it back on, but its hard to be a hero with an out-of-commission scooter.

I'm sorry to everyone who was hoping for some sugar, in the form of candy, from me. I was too preoccupied trying to keep my chain on. If I drive real carefuly it will stay, but what fun is that.

The smiles are fantastic. Keep it up everybody, and I will do the same.

Nothing terribly fantastic to share this week... again too busy worrying about my chain.

I did have a girl say "I love you" to me today. Not any guys out there saying that. I'm ok with that trend.

I love the construction workers standing on top of their scaffolding as I cruise back to the "Scooter Lair." They are always very excited. They yell louder than anyone. Man I love that.

This girl is funny, but what she says is true. I especially liked this excerpt:

Does Captain Friday lose his cool when he gets a rookie cashier at Wal-Mart? Of course he doesn't. Would Captain Friday steal a parking space when another driver has clearly claimed the space by using his or her turn signal? No! And it's not just because he doesn't have a car.

I am not doing this all for the fame, but it sure is fun! I love Muncie, and I love Friday. I hope that I truly have done something positive for the people that are around. Grown Men Jumping

So every week new things happen as you are cruising the streets spreading candy and joy! This week was no different. Last week my favorite event was when I found the fencing team (or something like it) practicing in the quad. This week it is the sight of more than one grown man's response to the "Happy Friday Guy" making an appearance in his Friday. I remember one man in particular who was a probably 240 lbs, and had evidence of hair loss, sure signs that you are in your 40's :) , and he was jumping up and down pumping his fist as I drove by. Fantastic.

There is one guy that I am going to have to get some sugar-free candy for. I see him every week, waiting by AJ, and this week I approached him, but he was saddened to tell me that he couldn't eat sugar. Time to adapt.

2 girls nearly tackled me today hoping to get their picture taken. Don't worry folks... I will gladly get my picture taken, all you have to do is ask. Just don't hurt me in the process. ;)

It is so very exciting how many people are responding with their own yells of "Happy Friday." Now I just hope that people are starting to believe it.

One more thing. After lunch next week, I will be making an appearance at the Bed Race also. Come support the homecoming events. (2pm S. of Woodworth)

Howdy All.

I hope you are all doing quite well. I decided to start this blog and maybe get some feedback from the streets. If you need to get in touch with me you can either try to put something here in the blog, or you can just email me.

Who knows whether I will actually have time to do anything here. If you guys have any fun photos you would like to put up here, maybe you can send them to me in an email, and I will find a place to stick them all and put them up.
